Jérôme François, the man in charge at the winery, was so inspired by the stories of his grandfather who was a winemaker that he skipped his initial plans of becoming a carpenter. He took over the vines of his „grand-père“ and used the barn of his uncle Charles for the winemaking. All of Jérômes vines are being worked biodynamically and only by horse. In the cellar his natural vision continues by avoiding the addition of chemicals.

The result are impressive and very pure wines that totally represent the character of Alsace’s beautiful terroir. The wines of La Grange De L‘Oncle Charles have such an honest and pure, almost reduced taste, that you can perfectly feel the respect that Jérôme has for the heritage, the vines of his grand-father and the land on which he‘s working.

Although the winery Čotar has a long history dating back to 1990 when the Čotar Family bottled their first wines they are not on everyone’s radar. Which they definitely should be! The family owns about 7.5ha of autochthonous and international varieties and produces absolutely astonishing wines. I remember tasting their Merlot blind for the first time and thinking of a big time Bordeaux. The same happend with a Cabernet Sauvignon during a blind tasting when nearly everyone thought of a Supertuscan. But also their white and orange wines are just absolutely impressive and charming. The freshness, the mild tannins and the present fruit combined with an incredibly pleasant mouthfeel makes these natural wines to some our best gems in the shop.
